A family has escaped serious injury following a multi-vehicle crash on the M20 smart motorway, which caused significant delays for drivers travelling towards London through Kent.
The collision occurred shortly after 1.05pm between Junction 4 (A228 Leybourne/Snodland) and Junction 3 (M26 interchange). Emergency services quickly responded, temporarily holding traffic and resulting in severe tailbacks.
Traffic congestion extended back to Junction 5 (Aylesford) on the westbound carriageway, with one lane remaining closed due to the incident. National Highways and Kent Police confirmed that all individuals involved have been accounted for and no life-threatening injuries were reported.
Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time or consider alternative routes while recovery efforts continue. Delays are expected to persist throughout the afternoon rush hour.
This incident has brought renewed attention to smart motorway safety concerns. Critics highlight that the limited hard shoulder space on smart motorways may increase the risk of collisions. National Highways has yet to comment on whether the smart motorway configuration played a role in this crash.
