A major fire erupted at the Ocado warehouse in Andover, prompting a declaration of a major incident as more than 200 firefighters battled the blaze for over 24 hours.
The fire broke out at approximately 2.44am on Tuesday at the automated distribution centre located in Walworth Business Park. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) responded with 20 pumps, 9 water carriers, and 3 elevated platforms to tackle the fire.
A total of 256 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked through thick smoke and intense heat to contain the fire. Four firefighters suffered slight smoke inhalation but remained on the scene, continuing their efforts to bring the fire under control.
Authorities have urged local residents to keep all windows and doors closed due to the large plumes of smoke produced by the fire. People have also been advised to avoid the Walworth Business Park area for their safety.
Witnesses described the scene as terrifying, noting the noise, heat, and glow from the fire illuminating the night sky.
The Ocado warehouse, which processes over 4,000 grocery orders daily using hundreds of robots within its ‘grid’ system, has been severely affected. The fire caused major damage including a partial roof collapse, leading to the cancellation of thousands of deliveries.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Andy Bowers confirmed that firefighters are expected to remain on site for an extended period as they continue to combat the persistent blaze.
Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
