Patrick Casey, a 22-year-old HGV driver from County Monaghan, Ireland, has been sentenced to four years and two months in prison for causing a fatal road crash in Shropshire.

The tragic incident occurred in January 2023 on the A5 at Nesscliffe, where Casey was driving a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) and attempted to overtake another HGV on a single carriageway. During this manoeuvre, he collided head-on with a Vauxhall Astra driven by 24-year-old Callum Powell from Ruyton, Shropshire.

Callum Powell died instantly at the scene as a result of the collision.

At Shrewsbury Crown Court on November 7, Casey was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving. In addition to his prison sentence, he received a driving ban lasting seven years and one month.

Sergeant Alex Saxton of Telford’s Operational Policing Unit commented on the case, saying, “This is a tragic case that’s devastated everyone involved. The whole thing could’ve been avoided if Casey made safer choices behind the wheel of such a powerful vehicle.”

He added, “While this sentence can’t bring Callum back, I hope it warns all road users to be more careful. Reckless decisions at speed can have deadly consequences.”

Authorities remind drivers to always follow the Highway Code when overtaking, especially around large vehicles like HGVs. It is important to ensure the road ahead is clear and to overtake only when it is safe and legal.

Passing large vehicles takes longer, so drivers should make sure they have enough room to complete the manoeuvre safely. Extra caution is advised at night and in poor visibility conditions, as it becomes harder to judge speed and distance.

Stay safe on the roads—one bad move can cost a life.
