Simon Bell, 46, a science teacher at Ebbsfleet Academy in Swanscombe, has been banned from teaching indefinitely following inappropriate conversations about a vulnerable pupil’s mental health. The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) panel found that Bell crossed professional boundaries by attempting to diagnose the pupil and telling her she was living in a “fantasy world.”

Bell worked at Ebbsfleet Academy from September 2018 to August 2021. During this period, he engaged in unprofessional discussions with one pupil regarding her mental well-being. The TRA panel revealed that Bell shared personal medical information about himself and acted as if he were a medical professional by diagnosing the pupil’s mental health condition. At one point, he told the pupil to “stop living in a fantasy world” and to “focus more on the real world.”

A TRA spokesperson said, “The public expects teachers to be role models and trusted individuals to pupils. Mr Bell’s comments to a vulnerable pupil such as Pupil A, to the point of diagnosing her, are wholly inappropriate. His actions also undermined the efforts of trained members of staff who were assisting the pupil.”

Further concerns arose regarding Bell’s background. The panel disclosed that he has a criminal record from the United States, including a 2014 Nevada conviction for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, for which he received a suspended prison sentence. In 2015, Bell was also cautioned by the Metropolitan Police for fraud after failing to disclose this conviction when applying for teaching positions in the UK.

Last month, the TRA issued a prohibition order against Bell, barring him from teaching indefinitely. He may apply to have the ban lifted in 2030, but there is no guarantee of reinstatement. Bell did not attend the hearing but described the process as “fair and impartial.”

This case highlights the importance of maintaining high professional standards in education to protect vulnerable pupils and ensure their well-being.
