Mohammed Nour Hgar, 32, has admitted manslaughter after the fatal stabbing of 23-year-old Samare Gerezgihir in Canterbury. The victim died from a stab wound to the chest following a violent altercation late on October 10, 2024.

The incident took place in a courtyard off Canterbury High Street just before midnight. After the violent fight, Hgar and another man fled the scene. CCTV footage captured their departure from the city centre and showed them travelling to Herne Bay by taxi.

Police arrested Hgar around 5am after spotting him attempting to change clothes in an effort to evade capture.

Originally charged with murder, Hgar pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of excessive self-defence at Canterbury Crown Court. He is due to be sentenced later this year. A second man, initially charged with murder, was cleared due to insufficient evidence.

Detective Inspector Colin McKeen commented on the case: “This case illustrates the fatal consequences of arming yourself with a knife during a dispute. A man has lost his life and another is facing a lengthy term in prison. I am pleased we were quickly able to identify the perpetrator of this terrible offence, who has now been brought to justice.”

The sentencing date for Mohammed Nour Hgar has not yet been confirmed.
