A heavily pregnant woman and her unborn baby have died following a tragic crash in Eltham. The collision occurred at approximately 6.15pm on Thursday near the junction of the A20 and Kidbrooke Park Road.

Police confirmed that the 38-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries, and her next of kin have been informed.

Eyewitnesses reported that an unmarked police car was travelling on the wrong side of the road before it collided with the woman’s vehicle as she turned into Sutcliffe Park Sports Centre.

One witness, a plumber who saw the crash, said, “Four police cars had their lights on, speeding like mad down the road. One hit her car, and it flipped three times. The car was badly smashed up.”

Another bystander described the unmarked black Volvo police car with blue lights and siren blaring. The woman’s blue car flipped multiple times, eventually landing upright after smashing across the pavement.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an independent investigation into the fatal collision. Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry of Greenwich police expressed his condolences, stating, “My heart goes out to the woman’s family and friends. The IOPC is leading the investigation and we will fully cooperate.”

The IOPC confirmed the investigation is at an early stage and that investigators are currently gathering evidence.

Paramedics and fire crews attended the scene, but sadly both the mother and her unborn baby died as a result of the crash.

The two officers in the police car were taken to hospital for treatment but have since been discharged.

Authorities are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant information to contact IOPC investigators on 0300 303 5610 or email [email protected].

The Metropolitan Police and the IOPC will provide updates as the investigation progresses.
