Police have made multiple arrests in connection with violence at recent London protests. Early this morning, officers detained suspects believed to have instigated disorder during demonstrations across the capital.

On Wednesday 8 July, four men were arrested and remain in custody. The individuals include a 40-year-old from Lewisham, a 58-year-old from Hammersmith and Fulham, a 44-year-old from Middlesbrough, and another 40-year-old also from Middlesbrough. All face charges related to violent disorder, with the 44-year-old additionally suspected of assaulting an emergency worker.

Since Saturday 4 July, six other men have been arrested in connection with the protests. These men, aged between 18 and 36, come from various locations including Cheshunt, Romford, New Malden, Edmonton, Wood Green, and one with no fixed address. They have all been released under investigation as inquiries continue.

The total number of arrests linked to violence and disorder between 31 May and 24 June, including incidents at an unlicensed music event in Brixton, has now reached 257. The Metropolitan Police are intensifying efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible. CCTV images of suspects involved in clashes from 3 to 13 June have been re-released to the public.

Commander Bas Javid commented on the situation: “When London witnessed the frankly unacceptable levels of violence during recent protests we said those actions would have consequences. This morning’s activity is proof of that and we expect to make more arrests for those who joined these demonstrations with the sole intention to cause trouble.”

He added, “During clashes with police, a small minority targeted officers with racial abuse or violence – pelting them with bottles, rocks or other items. Officers across the capital come to work to keep Londoners safe, it was deeply frustrating seeing them being so senselessly assaulted.”

Commander Javid also urged the public to assist the investigation: “As part of our commitment to holding those responsible for the violence to justice, we are also releasing more images today of those we suspect have been involved in clashes. If you have any information on the identity of these people, please get in touch.”

“I would like to thank those people who have come to us with information so far. Your information has been pivotal in helping us make these arrests today.”

If you recognise anyone from the released images or have information about the protests, contact the police investigation team on 020 8246 9386 or tweet @MetCC quoting the image number. You can also report anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
