John Frazer Yates, 28, a man with no fixed address, has received a prison sentence of 11 years and three months after the Court of Appeal increased his original jail term for causing death by dangerous driving and failing to provide a sample.
Yates was initially sentenced to eight years and three months in prison at Chester Crown Court in January 2023. In addition to the custodial sentence, he was banned from driving for 12 and a half years.
The case was reviewed following concerns that the original sentence was unduly lenient. On Thursday 20 April, the Court of Appeal stepped in to increase the punishment, ensuring that justice was properly served.
The 123 and I organisation welcomed the decision by the court, describing it as “the right decision” in a tragic case where Yates fled the scene after causing a fatal crash.
Yates’ case sends a clear message that dangerous driving resulting in death, especially when followed by fleeing the scene, will be met with strict penalties.
