Dara Singh, 53, from West Heath, Birmingham, was caught red-handed stealing a purse from a woman on the escalator at One Stop Shopping Centre, Perry Barr, on November 23.
A vigilant staff member at the shopping centre noticed Singh’s sly swipe and immediately alerted the police. Officers quickly responded and arrested Singh at the scene.
Singh was charged with theft from a person and appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court the following day. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 28 days in jail.
The arrest was part of Operation Willowvale, a dedicated police taskforce focused on combating pickpockets and opportunist thieves in Birmingham. The team works closely with One Stop Shopping Centre’s security to ensure the safety of shoppers.
