Wiltshire Police have recovered a body from the River Avon in Chippenham, believed to be 21-year-old Sebastian Sailes. Sebastian was reported missing late last month after last being seen near the Black Horse Pub on Lovers Walk.

Police divers found the body following a targeted search operation. Sebastian was last spotted on Thursday, 27 February, around 11.30pm. He was walking along Lovers Walk, thought to be heading south along Avon Valley Walk toward his home in Notton.

Although formal identification is pending, Wiltshire Police believe the discovery marks a tragic end to the search. Superintendent James Brain said: “This development will of course be devastating for Sebastian’s family. I would like to offer my sincere condolences, and I know that everyone involved in supporting this operation will also be thinking of Sebastian’s family. We will continue to offer our support over the coming days, and I would ask that their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time.”

Since Sebastian’s disappearance, Wiltshire Police have led a large-scale search backed by Wiltshire Search and Rescue, Lowland Rescue Oxfordshire, specialist teams from neighbouring forces, local businesses, and volunteers. The news has sent shockwaves through Chippenham, where Sebastian was well known and loved. Tributes have flooded in online as friends and neighbours mourn his loss and hoped for a safe return.

Police have yet to release further details about the circumstances of Sebastian’s death. An investigation will continue alongside the coroner’s inquiries once formal identification is confirmed. Anyone with information is urged to contact Wiltshire Police.

Our thoughts are with Sebastian’s family and friends during this heartbreaking time.
