A 19-year-old man has been found guilty of murder after shooting 20-year-old Jesse Lloyd-Smith in broad daylight on a street in Peckham, south-east London.
On the afternoon of Wednesday, 10 July 2024, Jesse’s mother heard gunshots near their home on East Surrey Grove. She found Jesse injured shortly before 5pm. Despite emergency medical efforts and a rapid transfer to hospital, Jesse sadly died from his wounds.
The court heard that the convicted teenager, known as Charles (full name withheld), drove a silver Ford S-Max near the Damilola Taylor Centre, parked the vehicle, and then ran towards Jesse, firing five shots. One of the bullets struck Jesse fatally. Charles fled the UK soon after the shooting but was later arrested and brought to justice.
A family spokesperson said, “Jesse was a young man filled with potential and dreams. His death is a heartbreaking reminder of how fragile life is.” The family expressed gratitude to the Metropolitan Police homicide team and London Air Ambulance for their support. They added, “Fighting for justice is not just for Jesse but for every child in our community who deserves to live without fear.”
Detective Chief Inspector Alex Gammampila of the Met’s homicide team condemned the killing and pledged to continue efforts to tackle gun crime in Peckham. The shooting sent shockwaves through the local community and reignited calls for action against youth and gang-related violence.
Other suspects linked to related violence have been arrested, including Abdoul Guene, 18, and a 17-year-old. Authorities are continuing their investigations as local residents demand stronger measures to protect young people on the streets.
