Matthew Macfadyen was seen filming in Godalming, Surrey, on Monday 8 May 2017 for the much-anticipated adaptation of Howards End. The story delves into the social and class divisions of early 20th century England through the lives of three interconnected families – the wealthy Wilcoxes, the idealistic Schlegels, and the struggling lower-middle-class Basts.
Macfadyen stars as Henry Wilcox, the powerful patriarch of the Wilcox family. The actor is well known for his impressive work across both television and film. His recent roles include starring alongside Keira Knightley in The Nutcracker and the Four Realms and Benedict Cumberbatch in The Current War, solidifying his reputation as one of Britain’s leading actors.
Born David Matthew Macfadyen in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, he is the son of a drama teacher mother and an oil executive father, with Scottish and Welsh heritage. Part of his childhood was spent abroad in Indonesia due to his father’s occupation. Upon returning to the UK, he secured a place at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London in 1992.
Macfadyen developed his acting skills on stage during the 1990s with the acclaimed theatre company Cheek by Jowl. He made his television debut in the 1998 adaptation of Wuthering Heights, but it was the BBC spy drama MI-5 (2002) that brought him widespread recognition. Playing Tom Quinn, the head of Section D, made him a household name and led to meeting his wife, actress Keeley Hawes, on set.
His portrayal of Mr Darcy in the 2005 television adaptation of Pride & Prejudice won him international acclaim.
