An LPG lorry leaking gas has forced the closure of the main road between Newport and Sandown on the Isle of Wight. Emergency crews were called to the scene after the driver reported the leak just after 8am.

Three fire crews from Shanklin, supported by teams from Newport, were mobilised to tackle the dangerous leak. Fire commanders quickly ordered the closure of this vital link road to ensure public safety.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police have established roadblocks at Blackwater and are diverting traffic away from the incident zone. The immediate area has been evacuated while firefighters work to bring the situation under control.

The leak was detected during checks at Wight Farm Energy and was pinpointed to the delivery pipe on the LPG lorry parked near the main biomass entrance. The lorry’s main tank has been isolated to prevent further gas escape.

Graham Orchard from Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue said: “We have put in the road closure to create a safe area to work. The road remains closed in both directions while fire crews manage the incident.”

Authorities are currently assessing the best way to stop the leak safely. Drivers are urged to avoid the area until the all-clear is given.
