A major search and rescue operation is currently underway off the coast of Tyneside following the disappearance of a passenger from a DFDS ferry.
The UK Coastguard was alerted after a man in his 60s vanished from a ferry travelling from the Netherlands to North Shields at approximately 12:15pm. The incident prompted an urgent and extensive response from rescue teams.
More than 30 RNLI volunteers from six stations including Filey, Scarborough, Whitby, Hartlepool, Tynemouth, and Blyth have joined the search effort. Additionally, the Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based in Humberside is conducting aerial searches over the area.
HM Coastguard issued a Mayday relay to alert all nearby vessels to assist in the search. Northumbria Police are also actively involved in the ongoing operation.
As of now, there has been no sign of the missing man. The search continues with no new updates at this time.
