Thirteen protesters have been arrested as Extinction Rebellion activists blockaded two of News Corporation’s main printing presses in Hertfordshire. The protest has prevented several newspapers from reaching the stands on Saturday.

Officers from Hertfordshire Police have been stationed on Great Eastern Road, Waltham Cross, since around 10pm on Friday night following reports of the protest. Approximately 100 activists remain at the site, refusing to engage with police officers.

Assistant Chief Constable Owen Weatherill commented on the situation: “The rights to protest are well established in this country and we remain committed to facilitating peaceful protest and ensuring compliance. However, at this time, the group are not engaging with us and the protest is causing major disruption to local businesses.”

He added, “At this time, 13 people have been arrested in connection with the incident, and we anticipate more arrests will be made. I’d like to reassure you that we are doing all we can to bring the incident to a peaceful conclusion, ensuring minimum disruption to the affected businesses.”

Police have vowed to maintain order and carry out further arrests as the standoff continues.
