Graham Medway, 62, was sentenced to 14 years in prison after admitting to orally raping a 3-year-old girl at Fort Victoria Country Park in Freshwater in August 2020. He must serve nine years behind bars followed by five years on licence for this horrific crime.
Judge Roger Hetherington’s original sentence is now under review. An application has been made to reconsider and potentially increase Medway’s jail term. Under UK law, the rape of a child under 13 can carry a life sentence. Current sentencing guidelines recommend a prison term ranging from 6 to 19 years for such offences.
A spokesperson for the Attorney General’s Office confirmed, “We have received a request for the case of Graham Medway to be considered under the unduly lenient sentence scheme. The Law Officers have 28 days from sentencing to consider the case.”
In a related development, Jonathan Richard Maertens, 35, who was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 16 years for child sex offences in Freshwater, also has his sentence under review. His case was originally sentenced by Judge Tim Mousley.
