The RNLI has launched a two-year trial to test a new Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) at Newhaven. This trial aims to determine if a permanent ILB can be added to the all-weather lifeboat (ALB) already stationed at Newhaven, a location known for its deep and safe harbour situated between Dover and Portsmouth.

Lewis Arnold, Newhaven’s Coxswain and Mechanic, described the development as “excellent” for the station. He explained, “Maintaining both lifeboats in Newhaven will help us respond more efficiently to the specific nature of each shout. Ultimately we aim to provide the most effective service to our community that we are able and save more lives at sea.”

The new ILB will be tasked with handling smaller and more challenging rescues in shallow waters, such as incidents where people become cut off by the tide. This will allow for quicker response times, while the larger ALB can concentrate on rescues in rougher sea conditions.

Newhaven’s existing Severn-class lifeboat, the David and Elizabeth Acland, covers a broad rescue area stretching from Belle Tout Lighthouse in the east to Saltdean in the west. The volunteer crew of this powerful vessel frequently deploys the smaller onboard Y-class boat to complete rescues in confined areas.

Phill Corsi, Sussex Coast Area Lifesaving Manager, commented on the trial, saying, “This is a hugely exciting development for Newhaven RNLI. The ILB trial will bring real benefits to those needing rescue, and it will provide more training chances for volunteers—new and old alike.”

Residents near Newhaven interested in joining the RNLI crew can now apply for volunteer positions. In addition to crew roles, fundraising and retail volunteers play an essential part in supporting the station’s operations.

Newhaven’s modern afloat station, constructed in 2004, was designed to accommodate an inshore lifeboat. Only minor modifications are required to welcome the new D-class ILB.

The trial will also enhance water safety education and drowning prevention efforts along the Sussex coast. With additional water safety officers and ongoing prevention work, the RNLI’s combined rescue and education initiatives aim to make seaside visits around Newhaven safer than ever before.
