A 44-year-old man from Hartlepool, Ahmed Alid, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. He faces charges of murder and attempted murder after a brutal assault that resulted in the death of 70-year-old Terrence Carney.
The incident occurred early Sunday morning in Hartlepool town centre. Mr Carney had just used a cash machine when the attack began. Police were called to Wharton Terrace shortly after 5am following reports of a man being assaulted. One victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Shortly after, officers discovered Terrence Carney critically injured approximately half a mile away on Tees Street. Despite the efforts of emergency crews, Mr Carney died at the scene.
Ahmed Alid was charged with murder and attempted murder at around 10pm on Monday. The charges come after a joint investigation conducted by Counter Terrorism Policing North East and Cleveland Police.
Detective Chief Superintendent James Dunkerley stated, “We are satisfied that this was an isolated incident and are not seeking anyone else in connection with this matter.” He also expressed gratitude to the community for their support during the investigation.
Deputy Chief Constable Victoria Fuller commended the bravery of the officers who responded to the scene and extended condolences to the family of Terrence Carney and the other victim involved in the attack.
