A woman has died and nine others were injured in a devastating crash on the M4 in Wiltshire late Sunday night.
The serious accident happened just before 11.30pm on June 22, between junctions 16 and 17 on the westbound M4 near Chippenham.
Emergency services rushed to the scene but tragically, a woman in her 40s was pronounced dead at the site. A second woman, in her 70s, suffered serious injuries and is in critical condition in hospital. Five others from the same vehicle sustained minor injuries. Three people in a second car were also hospitalised with non-life-threatening wounds.
Wiltshire Police have launched an urgent appeal for witnesses after reports emerged of a white vehicle involved in the crash that allegedly fled before officers arrived. Detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Team remain at the scene, piecing together exactly what happened.
“This is a tragic incident that has claimed a woman’s life and left several others injured. We are keen to hear from anyone who saw a white vehicle in the area before or after the collision,” a police spokesperson said.
The westbound carriageway between junction 16 (Swindon West) and junction 17 (Chippenham) is expected to remain closed for nearly all of Monday. The closure is causing major travel chaos for commuters and holidaymakers. Highways teams are managing diversions while forensic experts investigate the crash scene in detail. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and allow extra time for their journeys.
Police want anyone who saw the crash or a white vehicle nearby to come forward. Dashcam footage from the area could prove crucial.
