Kent Police have launched a major crackdown on Herne Bay and nearby areas following a summer marked by a surge in antisocial behaviour. The force responded to a significant increase in catapult attacks on wildlife, vandalism targeting local businesses, underage drinking, and disruptive beach parties.

In response to numerous complaints, officers intensified patrols and established a dedicated neighbourhood task force based at Herne Bay Police Station. The number of stop-and-searches more than doubled, rising from 63 last summer to 160 between June and August this year. Arrests also increased sharply, reaching 169 — nearly double the 90 arrests made during the previous summer.

Theft and shoplifting were among the primary concerns, with 83 arrests recorded this summer compared to 23 the previous year. So far, 49 individuals have faced charges, cautions, or community resolutions related to these offences.

To address large disruptive groups, police issued 58 dispersal orders in Herne Bay over the summer, a significant rise compared to just eight dispersal orders issued in nearby Whitstable. These orders were instrumental in breaking up troublemakers on the streets and beaches, helping to restore calm in these coastal hotspots.

Kent Police have pledged to maintain pressure on crime and antisocial behaviour to protect residents and local businesses. The force is urging the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or antisocial activity to help keep Herne Bay and surrounding areas safe and peaceful.
