Whitehall descended into chaos last night as police arrested 40 protesters following violent clashes during a Gaza demonstration. Officers enforcing Public Order Act regulations faced assaults, with six individuals held for attacking police. The remaining arrests were made for breaching protest conditions.

The protest was organised by Global Movement for Gaza UK, a group campaigning against Israel’s blockade of Gaza. This organisation is part of a wider international network and has intensified UK protests after Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla earlier this week.

Metropolitan Police imposed strict rules to keep Whitehall roads clear and minimise disruption during the protest. However, many demonstrators ignored these conditions, leading to tense confrontations. A police spokesperson said: “Officers imposed Public Order Act conditions on the protest to keep roads open and prevent serious disruption. Regrettably, a significant number of those present were intent on breaching the conditions, leading to clashes with officers who moved in to enforce them. Forty people have been arrested. Six of those arrests were for assaults on police officers while the majority were for breaching conditions.”

By nightfall, police had broken up the protest and Whitehall returned to normal. Officers confirmed they will maintain patrols to prevent any further disturbances. The recent increase in attacks on officers highlights rising tensions in London as global conflicts continue to spark local unrest. Police continue to balance maintaining public safety with respecting the right to protest.
