A tragic accident occurred on the M4 in Berkshire this afternoon when a minibus overturned, resulting in the death of a child and serious injuries to several passengers. The crash took place around 2:40pm on Sunday, May 11, between junctions 11 (Reading) and 10 (Wokingham) eastbound.

Emergency services responded rapidly with six ambulances, five critical care units, air ambulances, police, and fire crews attending the scene. Thames Valley Police confirmed the fatality, stating, “Sadly, a child died in the collision and our thoughts remain with the family who are being supported at this extremely difficult time.” Royal Berkshire Fire & Rescue and Thames Valley Air Ambulance also provided assistance. Several seriously injured passengers were taken to hospital for treatment.

National Highways announced major closures on the M4 today. The eastbound carriageway is closed from junction 11 (Reading) to junction 10 (Wokingham), while the westbound side is closed between junctions 8/9 (Maidenhead) and 11. Additionally, a separate vehicle fire caused delays between junctions 7 and 8 westbound.

Traffic congestion extended over three miles, with delays ranging from 30 to 50 minutes. The situation was further complicated by broken-down vehicles contributing to the traffic jams.

Thames Valley Police have urged drivers to avoid the area, warning that the road closure is expected to remain in place for the foreseeable future. Diversions have been set up, causing additional congestion on the A329M, A308M, and A404M. A police spokesperson said, “We would ask motorists to continue to avoid the area. The closure is likely to remain in place for the foreseeable future.”

Authorities are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage to contact Thames Valley Police on 101, quoting incident 884 (11/05). The incident has prompted renewed calls for stricter safety checks on group transport vehicles, particularly those carrying children. Local councillors have expressed condolences and support to the families affected by this tragedy.
