A Kempston man was left devastated when a neighbour’s e-bike spontaneously ignited, sparking a fierce garden fire on 26 April. Levi Lee, 35, a graphic designer, awoke to flames and explosions caused by three camping gas bottles that caught fire during the blaze. Emergency services, including firefighters, police, and paramedics, responded swiftly to contain the incident and assist those affected.
Exploding Gas Bottles
The fire intensified rapidly after the e-bike caught fire, causing three camping gas canisters in Levi’s garden to explode. The blasts were so powerful that they shook the entire property, forcing Levi and his family to evacuate in their sleep clothes. The dramatic scenes unfolded early in the morning, leaving significant damage to the garden.
Swift Emergency Response
Firefighters arrived promptly and tackled the blaze with urgency, while police established a safety perimeter to keep neighbours at a secure distance. Paramedics treated Levi’s wife and the neighbour, both visibly shaken but unharmed, following the frightening event.
Summer Plans Up In Smoke
Levi expressed his heartbreak over the loss, saying the couple had invested a lot of work into their garden. With the garden severely damaged, their usual summer BBQs with family, friends, and neighbours now appear unlikely this year as they face a lengthy restoration process.
Neighbours E-bike Sparks Blaze
The cause of the fire was linked to the neighbour’s e-bike, believed to have combusted spontaneously. The fire’s sudden onset and rapid spread caught the family off guard, turning a peaceful spring morning into a traumatic event.
