Victim Named as Eghosa Ogbebor

Metropolitan Police have identified the victim of the fatal shooting in Woolwich on Thursday as 14-year-old Eghosa Ogbebor. Three suspects, including two minors aged 14 and 16, remain in custody on suspicion of murder following the daylight attack.

Targeted Shooting in South-East London

Eghosa was found dead on Lord Warwick Street after emergency services responded to calls shortly before 4pm. Detectives have stated there is no indication this was random violence and believe the shooting was a targeted attack.

Following the incident, two teenagers aged 14 and 16, alongside an 18-year-old man, were arrested and are currently being questioned as police investigate the motive.

Crime Scene Investigations Ongoing

Officers have secured the area around the terrace above shops and The Greyhound pub near the shooting location. A police tent has been erected while investigations continue. The pub’s landlady confirmed police are reviewing CCTV footage from the premises.

A staff member at the pub reported hearing a loud bang but did not witness the shooting. She also indicated that a suspect may have fled by jumping from nearby flats, suggesting they could be a resident there.

Nearby, a Jamaican food van operator was seen leaving briefly to retrieve a generator before returning to the scene where the police have maintained a cordon.

Eyewitnesses Describe Unfolding Chaos

  • Witnesses have described groups of up to 15 youths allegedly armed with machetes in the area.
  • There are reports that the suspects had been seen in the vicinity for several days “looking for someone.”
  • One witness saw armed police detaining a suspect close to a Premier shop approximately ten minutes after the shooting.
  • Rumours circulate that the firearm used was discarded in the Thames, but police have not confirmed this claim.

Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card said: “Our thoughts remain with Eghosa’s family and loved ones, who are being supported by specially trained officers and have requested privacy at this difficult time.”

“We have increased patrols in the area. With three arrests made, the investigation is ongoing. We urge anyone with information to come forward.”

Police Appeal for Information

Officers are appealing to witnesses or anyone with video footage related to the incident to contact police on 101 quoting CAD 4848/2APR, or provide anonymous information to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

This latest fatal shooting highlights ongoing concerns around youth violence in London. Police continue to explore whether gang involvement or other motives were factors in the attack on the young boy.
