A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after a chilling late-night attack on a teenage girl in a quiet North Somerset village. Avon and Somerset Police have launched an urgent appeal for witnesses as the suspect is now on conditional bail while the investigation continues.
Teen Girl Escapes Brutal Rape Attempt in Rooksbridge
The victim, believed to be in her late teens, was attacked around 1am on 16 March in the Rooksbridge area. Showing incredible bravery, she managed to break free and flag down a passing member of the public for help.
Neighbourhood Inspector Charmaine Dyne said: “A thorough investigation is underway, and we remain in contact with the victim who has been offered access to specialist support services.”
She added: “We want to remind people that any violence towards women and girls will not be tolerated, and any victim of a sexual offence will be heard, believed, and supported.”
Police Hunt Key Witness and Dashcam Footage
Detectives are desperate to find a woman seen wearing a lanyard while walking with a small child. Police say she was approached by another woman asking for directions to Bridgwater – a crucial encounter that could break the case wide open.
Motorists driving through Rooksbridge, Loxton, Sevier Road, and Axbridge between 6am and 7.45am on the morning after the attack are urged to check their dashcam footage. Officers believe any clips could help identify witnesses and build the timeline.
Anyone who saw a woman walking alone in rural areas during this time is also asked to come forward without delay.
Investigation Intensifies as Police Urge Public to Speak Up
Specialist officers are supporting the victim while police continue gathering vital evidence. Authorities also praised the quick-thinking member of the public who helped the teenager immediately after the assault.
The investigation remains a top priority. Anyone with information, dashcam footage, or who recognises the woman asking for directions should contact Avon and Somerset Police immediately.
