East Sussex Chaos: Car Flips on A27, Rush Hour Turns Nightmare

Rush Hour Gridlock as Crash Closes A27

A car flipped on the A27 westbound near Southerham roundabout late this morning, sparking major travel chaos. The smash happened around 10am, right at the height of rush hour, forcing emergency crews to shut the road. Traffic quickly came to a grinding halt as recovery teams battled to clear the scene.

Brighton & Hove Albion Fans Stuck in Traffic Jam

Thousands of Seagulls supporters heading to the Amex Stadium to see Brighton take on Liverpool were caught in the carnage. Coaches operated by Seagulls Travel were over an hour late picking fans up. Police confirmed:

“Emergency services received a report of a collision approaching the Southerham roundabout on the A27 near Lewes at about 9.30am today.”

Match officials delayed kick-off to 12:45pm to give fans stuck in the tailbacks extra time to get to the stadium.

Traffic Chaos Spreads: A259 and Bus Routes Crippled

Desperate drivers fled the jam on the A27 by diverting onto the A259 through Newhaven, creating near standstills in the town. Bus services between Brighton and Eastbourne also suffered major delays, caught up in the widespread gridlock.

The A27 briefly reopened with one lane but was shut again to fully recover the overturned vehicle. Sussex Travel Watch has now confirmed the A27 is fully reopened.

More Trouble: Crash on A26 Adds to Delays

To add insult to injury, emergency services also responded to another crash on the A26 between Beddingham and Newhaven. Recovery work is ongoing, so motorists should brace for more delays.
