A prisoner serving life at HMP Isle of Wight landed a jaw-breaking punch on a jail officer in a desperate escape attempt from a drug-ravaged wing, a court heard.
Jail Brawl at Parkhurst
Daniel Plain, a lifer at Parkhurst, appeared via video link at Isle of Wight court on March 10. He admitted assaulting an emergency worker on January 6, 2026, at the notorious prison.
Prosecutor Giles Fletcher told the court Plain had acted bizarrely all day — distracted, off-kilter, and “not behaving normally.” By late afternoon, he seemed “under the influence” and wobbly on his feet before suddenly clocking a prison officer with a savage jab to the jaw.
A fracas erupted involving two staff before emergency alarms sounded and more officers swarmed.
Desperate Punch to Flee Drug-Hit Wing
Plain apologised for the attack, which left the officer with a sore jaw and bruises. But defence lawyer Hannah Bray revealed it was a “calculated move” — Plain wanted out of a drug-infested wing that was wrecking his mental health.
The convict was immediately moved to segregation after the violent outburst.
Lifer’s Violent Past
- Plain is serving life with a minimum 10-year tariff.
- He’s up for parole in 2029.
- The 37-times convicted crook has 57 offences to his name.
- He’s also got a previous wounding conviction at HMP Maidstone.
The court hit him with an extra four weeks behind bars, running alongside his life sentence, plus a £154 fine.
