Worrying Meningitis B Outbreak Hits Canterbury and East Kent
Health Secretary Wes Streeting has raised the alarm over a fast-spreading meningitis B outbreak in Canterbury and East Kent. Four cases have been confirmed, with another 11 under urgent investigation. The University of Kent is now rolling out an emergency vaccination drive for its students to curb the spread.
Two Dead in Nightclub Meningitis Cluster
Addressing MPs in the Commons, Streeting called the outbreak “unprecedented” and “rapidly developing.” Both recent deaths have been officially linked to the cluster, which mostly traces back to Club Chemistry nightclub in Canterbury. The cases stem from attendance dates of March 5th, 6th, and 7th. The nightclub has voluntarily closed its doors amid the crisis.
Rapid Response: Antibiotics and Contact Tracing in Overdrive
- UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) first alerted on March 13th.
- Contact tracing launched immediately, with urgent antibiotic treatment offered.
- University of Kent notified and on board by March 14th.
- French authorities also reported a linked case abroad.
Saturday night saw an influx of young patients admitted with meningococcal symptoms, prompting UKHSA’s full-scale action by Sunday morning. By 5pm, antibiotics were rushed to two university halls, with a public health alert issued an hour later. So far, 700 antibiotic doses have been administered.
Community on High Alert: Schools Warned, Vaccinations Under Way
Following two sixth-form cases, including one tragic death, UKHSA swiftly contacted local schools and parents. Four treatment centres are now open across Canterbury, stocked with 11,000 antibiotic doses—with no appointment needed.
“A single course of antibiotics is highly effective in preventing the contraction and spread of this disease in 90 per cent of cases,” urged Streeting, calling on anyone exposed to get treatment immediately.
The government will launch a targeted Meningitis B vaccine programme for students living in university halls in Canterbury within days. Streeting also promised to push the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation to review vaccine eligibility across the UK.
UKHSA will provide daily case updates every morning at 9:30am. Streeting vowed to keep Parliament fully briefed as this alarming outbreak unfolds.
