Medmerry Beach Shut Down Over Suspected Bomb
Medmerry Beach in West Sussex was evacuated yesterday after a suspected bomb was spotted on the sand. Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team volunteers rushed to the scene at 12.34pm on 11 March following reports of a possible explosive device.
The team quickly identified the suspicious object and sent photos to Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts. A safety cordon was set up, closing the beach to the public.
But by 3pm, the rising tide swallowed the device, forcing crews to halt operations until the next day.
Bomb Squad Returns for Dangerous Job
At 9.30am on 12 March, coastguards re-established the cordon and locked down Medmerry Beach once again. EOD teams warned the device was large and required an enormous one-kilometre safety zone.
Sussex Police and Littlehampton Coastguard Rescue Team were called in for backup as the high-stakes operation kicked off.
Controlled Blasts Shake West Sussex
At 3.30pm, bomb disposal experts set off two controlled explosions, safely destroying the device. The blasts rattled windows and were reportedly heard as far away as Middleton-on-Sea.
Coastguards stood down an hour later, declaring the beach clear — for now.
Warning: Don’t Touch Suspicious Beach Finds
Rescue teams urge beachgoers to stay vigilant and avoid touching any suspicious objects. They warned, “Ordnance comes in many forms and can remain deadly even after decades.”
“Do not touch or move any suspected devices. If you find anything suspicious, call the Coastguard immediately.”
Medmerry Beach remains closed due to ongoing risks, including unexploded bombs. Spot anything suspicious? Dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard without delay.
