Work Starts Next Week on New Bus and Cycle Lane to Slash Brighton Traffic Chaos
New Lane Reserved for Buses, Cyclists and Taxis Only
Construction kicks off next Wednesday on a brand-new bus and cycle lane along the busy A23 at Patcham. Stretching southbound between Brangwyn Crescent and Brangwyn Drive, this 24/7 lane will be strictly for buses, cyclists, and taxis. The old cycle lane is out, replaced by a slicker, smarter system designed to boost reliability and safety.
Brighton & Hove City Council says the road’s width can handle the new lane without cutting down existing traffic lanes. That means car drivers keep their full road space while buses and cyclists get their own dedicated strip. The goal? Ease congestion and slash annoying delays.
Safer Streets with New Crossing and Slower Speeds
The revamp also brings a new pedestrian crossing, road resurfacing, and a reduced speed limit dropping from 40mph to 30mph. These changes aim to keep everyone safer—whether you’re walking, cycling, or driving.
Funding, Timetable, and What Locals Can Expect
Thanks to a cash injection from the Department for Transport via the council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan, work starts on 18 March and should finish in roughly 10 weeks.
Residents won’t lose access to their homes during the works, although temporary traffic lights may appear from time to time.
“This scheme will help make bus journeys more reliable while improving safety for residents and cyclists,” said Councillor Trevor Muten, cabinet member for transport and city infrastructure. “With no lanes lost for general traffic, we expect less congestion and better flow on this busy route into the city centre.”
