Second Man Arrested After Axe-Wielding Intruders Storm Manchester Mosque During Ramadan Prayers
Greater Manchester Police have nabbed a second suspect over a terrifying axe attack at Manchester Central Mosque during Ramadan prayers. The men were caught before they could harm anyone.
Second Suspect in Custody
A man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a Section 18 assault. He remains in police custody as detectives continue questioning him.
The first suspect, a man in his 50s, was detained at the scene during the initial police response and is also still being held.
Deadly Weapons Carried Into Mosque
The two men entered the mosque carrying bags believed to contain an axe, knife, and hammer. Worshippers quickly intervened, detaining one intruder and confiscating the weapons before any threats or injuries occurred.
Ramadan attendees were praying at the time, with the incident sending shockwaves through the community.
Investigation Ongoing, Police Stay Vigilant
Detectives have secured a warrant to question the first suspect further. Assistant Chief Constable John Webster said: “Our investigation has been working at pace, leading to us making an arrest for the outstanding man this morning.”
Police say there’s no intelligence suggesting a wider threat and they’re not seeking any more suspects. They’re working closely with counter-terrorism units and keeping an “open mind” on motives.
The force has boosted patrols around the mosque and urged worshippers to stay cautious: “Travel in groups where possible and don’t leave children unattended.”
