Lorry Driver Dies After Fire Erupts in Cab from Gas Cylinder
Firefighters Rush In, But It’s Too Late
A 54-year-old lorry driver, Darius Labunskas, has died following a devastating fire inside his cab in July 2025. Fire crews from Stockhill, Hucknall, and Arnold fire stations raced to Watnall Road Aerodrome at 11:04pm on 26 July after reports of a man engulfed in flames. Despite being rushed to Queens Medical Centre, Mr Labunskas succumbed to his injuries the next morning.
Blaze Triggered by LPG Gas Cylinder
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service revealed the fire started from a three-kilogram LPG gas cylinder used for cooking inside the enclosed lorry cab. Assistant Coroner Nathanael Hartley confirmed the cause of death as severe burns.
“On behalf of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to all who knew Mr Labunskas,” Fire Investigation and Arson Reduction Officer Beth Pearson said.
Urgent Safety Warning on Portable Gas Devices
Richard Leighton, Head of Community Safety and Engagement, issued a stark warning to the public:
“This tragic incident highlights the dangers of using portable cooking devices in enclosed spaces. These devices should only be used in well-ventilated, appropriate outdoor areas. Always check equipment condition before use, never leave it unattended while operating, and make sure it is cleaned and safely shut down afterwards.”
This tragedy is a brutal reminder: never use LPG cylinders indoors. Follow strict fire safety protocols to protect yourself and others.
