Massive Blaze Rips Through Devon School

Firefighters scrambled to The Promise School in Okehampton, Devon, after a ferocious fire broke out around 3.30pm. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky, sparking alarm across the town.

About 15 fire engines and specialist units tackled the raging inferno with water jets and aerial ladder platforms, battling to contain the flames.

School Severely Damaged But No One Hurt

Officials confirmed the building has been badly damaged but, thankfully, no injuries have been reported. The blaze left the school in ruins.

“It was dark smoke, which usually means something industrial,” said local Glennon Walters, whose three-year-old son first spotted the fire. “We thought it was the industrial estate, but then realised it was the new school.”

Police Calm Public, Update Parents

Sgt Tom Ottley of Devon and Cornwall Police said: “It was a sizeable blaze, but firefighters have it under control. There’s no current risk to other properties or casualties.”

Police are working closely with the school to update parents and will provide further info overnight. The school was due to reopen after half-term on Monday but now faces an uncertain future amid ongoing investigations.

Locals and commuters are urged to check travel updates before heading to the area on Monday.
