Rogue Rubbish Tycoon Slapped with £1.4 Million Fine for Dumping 4,275 Tonnes of Waste

Varun Datta, 36, has been hit with a staggering £1.4 million penalty after illegally dumping over 4,275 tonnes of rubbish at 16 sites across England. His waste trail ran from Lincolnshire to Middlesbrough, polluting farms, a historic manor, and even a nature reserve.

Widespread Environmental Havoc Across Seven Counties

Datta’s dump spree spread across multiple counties including Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Lancashire, Kent, Surrey, Rutland, and Middlesbrough. None of the fly-tipping had the proper licences, leaving landowners with a costly mess and the environment badly damaged.

Huge Cash Penalties and Suspended Jail Sentence

  • £1.1 million confiscation order targeting Datta’s illegal profits
  • £100,000 compensation to victims – £70,000 to Middlesbrough Council and £30,000 to Lancashire Wildlife Trust
  • £200,000 in prosecution costs
  • Four-month jail sentence, suspended for 18 months
  • 30 days of rehab activities and 200 hours of unpaid work

Judge Paul Farrar KC slammed the offences as “reckless” and damaging: “The smell and flies affected some sites, harming air quality and costing landowners a fortune.”

Emma Viner from the Environment Agency warned: “We will never stop fighting to end the scourge of waste crime which scars our environment and communities.”

Two other men caught up in the scandal also received fines and suspended sentences. Warrants are still outstanding for two more suspects.
