Young Afghan man stabs stranger in neck after cash row in Piccadilly Gardens
A violent dispute over a £20 debt ended in bloodshed last July when 19-year-old Said Sadat stabbed a man with a broken bottle in Manchester’s Piccadilly Gardens.
Debt dispute turns savage attack
The victim went up to Sadat on July 27, 2023, claiming he was paying off a debt for his cousin and handed him a £20 note. But Sadat flew into a rage, ripped up the note, snapped: “I don’t need your money, I will sort you out,” then stormed off.
Minutes later he returned armed with a broken bottle. The court heard Sadat lunged at the victim, slashing a deep 12cm wound across his neck.
Victim rushed to hospital
Emergency surgery saved the victim’s life after the brutal attack. He also suffered cuts to his upper left arm and right hand.
Sadat was arrested shortly after the stabbing.
Sadat already on bail for earlier attack
The court revealed Sadat was on bail from a previous violent offence. Back in June 2024, he and two accomplices chased two men on a night out in the city centre.
Sadat’s co-defendants – Mussab Amari and Waheedullah Paktiawal – also faced jail time for assaults and weapons charges.
Sentences handed down
- Sadat, of Chadderton, was jailed for three years and nine months for theft, assault causing bodily harm, and the section 20 wounding.
- Amari, from Wythenshawe, got 12 months for assault.
- Paktiawal from Openshaw received an 18-month suspension, 200 hours unpaid work, and rehabilitation requirements.
All three must pay £200 compensation to their victims.
“Sadat pleaded guilty to wounding with a broken bottle,” said prosecutor Hayley Parkes. “He did not have a knife.”
