Rapist Jailed for 20 Years After Brutal Attacks in Devon

Peter Gilbert, 54, from Plymouth, has been locked up for two decades after subjecting his victim to horrific violence during multiple rapes. The savage attacks spanned Newquay, Plymouth, and Truro.

Chilling Court Details Reveal Abuse and Threats

Gilbert appeared at Truro Crown Court on Wednesday 18 February, where a jury found him guilty of three counts of rape, along with a separate non-sexual offence. He also pleaded guilty to breaching a court order and sharing an intimate video to cause distress.

The court heard that, in a shocking confession, Gilbert admitted to the crimes while at Charles Cross Police Station for an unrelated matter in June 2022. The victim revealed he raped her numerous times, including after a night out in Newquay.

She described freezing in terror as Gilbert made terrifying threats and claimed his larger size forced her compliance. He even filmed an oral rape, carefully ensuring only the victim was visible, and used the footage to intimidate others.

Judge and Police Condemn Gilbert’s Violence

Judge Simon Carr revealed the extent of Gilbert’s cruelty, noting he caused scarring by stubbing out cigarettes on the victim’s arms. The judge slammed Gilbert for weaponising the filmed assaults.

Detective Sergeant Megan Cornish branded Gilbert “an extremely dangerous rapist and sexual predator.” She praised the victim’s “immense courage” that helped bring him to justice and urged other victims to come forward.

“Gilbert showed no regard for [the victim’s] wellbeing in his evil pursuit for sexual gratification.”

“All reports made will be investigated and you will be believed.”
