Ex-BGT Star Feared Arrest Would End Her Life Before Tragic Suicide, Inquest Reveals

BGT Dancer’s Final Nightmare

Kerri-Anne Donaldson, a 2014 Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist with dance troupe Kings and Queens, feared her life was over after being arrested for an alleged sexual offence, an inquest has heard. The 38-year-old from Farnborough, Hampshire, was found dead at home on June 7, 2023 — just days after police questioned her and she denied the claims.

Terrified of Public Shame and Prison

Three days before her death, Kerri-Anne gave a police interview at Basingstoke Police Station about the charges. During questioning, she warned she would take her own life “if someone finds out” about the allegations.

“In some cases, such threats are said without intent to act,” said Detective Constable Benjamin Harris. “But it’s something we take very seriously.”

Police took her suicide threats seriously but also considered they might be attempts to intimidate the complainant.

Desperate for Support But Still Struggling

After her arrest, Kerri-Anne was placed on a high-risk care plan with constant observation following an overdose incident. Psychiatrists assessed her, deciding she was not actively suicidal at the time, and she was discharged.

Her sister, Cara Donaldson, revealed Kerri-Anne was overwhelmed, emotional, and tearful. She insisted the sexual offence claims were “all constructed” and denied any wrongdoing. Despite family support, Kerri-Anne’s final messages suggested she was saying goodbye. Cara discovered her body the next day.

Heartfelt Tributes from Dance World

Kerri-Anne shared the stage with future Strictly Come Dancing stars Neil Jones, Katya Jones, and Kevin Clifton — all shattered by her passing.

Neil Jones called her “like a big sister” with “a cheeky laugh and a heart of gold.”

Kevin Clifton said: “Absolutely heartbroken. She was always the loveliest girl. A friend and dance partner.”

Inquest Reveals Chilling Details

  • Cause of death recorded as hanging.
  • Post-mortem found non-lethal overdose levels of medication in her system.
  • ‘You Are So Beautiful’ was played repeatedly at the scene.
  • A folded photo of her dog accompanied by the words: “If only you knew how many times you had saved me.”

Remembering Kerri-Anne: A Life Cut Short

Cara gave a touching tribute: “Heart of gold, full of fun, brought happiness into my life. Career-driven, adored by family and friends, and a fantastic dance teacher loved by all.”

“Her dance studio business came with the usual financial stresses, but her dreams were simple: ‘a big house, car, and to be rich and famous.’”
