Yellow Weather Warnings Hammer UK with Snow and Ice
Britain is bracing for a blast of freezing weather as yellow warnings for snow and ice sweep across huge parts of the country. After weeks of relentless rain, the misery is about to get a whole lot colder. Scotland and England are on high alert, facing dangerous icy patches and snowfalls.
The Met Office has issued these warnings lasting until 10am Sunday, covering most of Scotland and large swathes of England.
Floods Add To The Chaos
As if freezing temperatures weren’t enough, flooding is also causing havoc. More than 70 areas are on high alert with hundreds of homes already battered by rising waters. The Environment Agency has urged residents to stay vigilant and take extra care.
Snowfall Predictions and Travel Chaos
Saturday night’s rain will turn to snow at low levels before a milder air pushes the snow higher up the hills. The Met Office warns:
- 1-3cm of snow expected at low levels
- 3-7cm likely above 150m elevation
- Up to 15cm possible above 400m
“Ice will be a major hazard,” says the Met Office, especially in northeast England and parts of Scotland where frozen ground threatens dangerous conditions. Snow should change back to rain by Sunday morning, with freezing rain possible before a slow thaw kicks in.
What’s Next? More Madness Ahead
Met Office expert Greg Dewhurst warned Sunday will feel blustery, with showers and some lingering hill snow. Meanwhile, milder air will push into the southwest, with Cornwall and Devon hitting a mild 12C. The east will stay chilly at just 4C to 5C.
Next week looks unsettled and blustery, with scattered showers continuing. Things might ease off briefly on Tuesday — but fresh weather systems roar back by Wednesday. Thursday could be drier, but don’t put those waterproofs away yet.
Stay safe, plan your journeys, and expect travel chaos as Britain battles this brutal winter blast!
