The Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team faced a shocking double whammy after two cheeky yobs, saved from Scafell Pike in freezing December, skipped out on a £130 hotel bill—and vanished without returning borrowed head torches. The brave, seven-hour winter rescue ended on a bitter note.
Public Pours in £45k to Back Mountain Heroes
Despite the walkout, the public has thrown its weight behind the heroic volunteers. Richard Warren of Wasdale Mountain Rescue revealed donations have soared to an eye-watering £45,500 — nearly half the team’s annual running costs.
The Wasdale Head Inn kindly offered emergency shelter at a reduced rate, and the rescue squad pledged to cover any shortfall to keep that goodwill alive for future mountain dramas.
Volunteers Risk Everything For FREE — Now Public Pays Up
These mountain heroes are unpaid and on call 24/7, 365 days a year, risking life and limb to save others in the wild Lake District.
“Every cloud has a silver lining,” said Warren, quoting his mum. Thanks to the donations, extra funds beyond the unpaid hotel bill will boost their £100,000-plus yearly operational costs.
