Overnight Cable Theft Foiled by Sharp-Eyed Police Helicopter
In a daring overnight heist near the A1, thieves targeting electric vehicle charging cables were caught red-handed thanks to a sharp-eyed National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter crew.
Just before 10pm on January 20, North Yorkshire Police received reports that electric vehicle charging cables had been cut and stolen from a service station — the crime had taken place less than 30 minutes earlier.
Helicopter Tracks Suspects to Remote Hideout
Officers quickly traced the suspects to a remote spot near Walden Stubbs. The National Police Air Service sprang into action, dispatching a helicopter crew from Carr Gate to monitor the area from above.
The bird’s-eye view was key. The aerial team fed real-time updates to officers on the ground, helping them cordon off the area safely and trap the suspects before they had a chance to escape.
Two Men Nabbed, Stolen Cables Recovered
With air support guiding the operation, police swooped and arrested two men without a fuss. A stash of the stolen EV charging cables was recovered, and investigations are ongoing.
Why NPAS Is a Policing Game-Changer
NPAS’s ability to cover large areas quickly, pinpoint suspects, and manage tough rural terrain makes it an invaluable tool in today’s policing arsenal.
“The helicopter’s role often means the difference between crooks making a clean getaway and being caught,” a police spokesperson said. “It also keeps our officers and the public safe during high-risk arrests.”
This daring bust proves once again that teamwork between air units and ground teams is crucial — especially when every second counts.
