Standedge Tunnel Blaze Brings Rail Chaos Between West Yorkshire and Manchester
Rail passengers are facing travel chaos after a fierce fire tore through Standedge Tunnel on Sunday morning. The blaze erupted over 1.5km inside the three-mile tunnel linking Marsden, West Yorkshire, and Diggle, Greater Manchester, forcing a complete shutdown of all train services between Marsden and Manchester.
Firefighters Battle Gruelling Tunnel Inferno
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue crews confronted thick smoke and cramped conditions inside the tunnel. It took two hours just to get water onto the burning railway machinery due to scarce water supplies, limited visibility, and tricky access.
“Firefighters progressed on foot through challenging conditions. Once located, the fire was extinguished after close cooperation with Network Rail and support from Greater Manchester Fire Service,” said the fire service.
Train Services Suspended – Delays to Plague Commuters All Day
National Rail warned early Monday that the tunnel remains unsafe and will require extensive repairs. “Major disruption is expected until the end of the day,” the advisory stated. Trains along the route are cancelled, delayed, or rerouted with no clear end in sight.
TransPennine Express confirmed ongoing overnight repair work but told passengers to brace for more travel headaches on affected lines.
Emergency Teams Hailed for Heroic Efforts
Fire crews from Slaithwaite, Meltham, Huddersfield, and Holmfirth stations received high praise for their heroic battle against the fire inside the tunnel, keeping the situation under control amid intense conditions.
