Trump Slaps Tariffs on Europe Over Greenland Grab

Former US President Donald Trump has dropped a bombshell: he plans to hit eight European countries with hefty new tariffs if they don’t agree to the “complete and total purchase” of Greenland by the US.

Tariffs Target Eight European Countries

In a recent statement, Trump announced a 10% tariff on all goods imported from the likes of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland starting February 1. If talks fail, tariffs will leap to a punishing 25% from June 1.

He made it crystal clear: “The tariffs stay in place until a deal for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland is reached.”

Greenland: The Security Hot Potato

Trump claims Greenland is a global security flashpoint. “China and Russia want Greenland,” he warned, accusing Denmark of being unable to protect the icy island. He also hinted at mysterious European interest, saying various nations have “surged to Greenland, for purposes unknown,” calling it a threat to “the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Planet.”

He insisted the US is the only power capable of safeguarding Greenland, citing advanced missile defence systems and emerging weapons tech as reasons why military control is a must.

A Rekindled Dream Stirs Atlantic Tensions

This isn’t the first time Trump tossed around buying Greenland. His 2019 proposal was flatly rejected by Denmark and blasted by European leaders, with Greenland’s government underscoring its autonomy.

Now, Trump claims the US has eyed Greenland for over 150 years and says the strategic stakes are higher than ever.

Trade War Warning: Allies on Edge

If these tariffs go ahead, it could spark a major trade war with close US allies and key trading partners. Trump framed the moves as crucial for “global peace and security,” urging swift action to defuse what he calls a “potentially perilous situation.”

He wrapped up saying the US is “immediately open to negotiation” with Denmark and the affected nations.

So far, no word from Europe or Greenland’s leaders. The world watches and waits.
