A Metropolitan Police officer has been cleared of assault causing grievous bodily harm after a dramatic 2022 incident in Redbridge.
PC Liam Newman Acquitted at Southwark Crown Court
PC Liam Newman, 31, walked free on Tuesday, 13 January following a tense trial at Southwark Crown Court. The case hinged on events from April 2022 in Woodford Green, where 61-year-old Leonard Sandiford suffered life-changing injuries after falling from an outbuilding.
The fall happened moments after Newman deployed his Taser on Mr Sandiford. Newman denied the assault charge throughout the trial. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) conducted a thorough investigation into the incident.
Police Chief Regrets Injuries but Stands By Taser Use
Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell: “Our thoughts are with Mr Sandiford, who has suffered life-changing injuries. Any harm following police contact is deeply regrettable and officers must face the highest scrutiny. They face tough decisions in the moment every day. We will work closely with local residents and partners to address concerns and support those affected.”
Bell confirmed the Metropolitan Police will continue rigorous Taser training and review its use. “We believe the Taser remains a vital tool but must be used appropriately,” he said.
What’s Next for PC Newman?
PC Newman has been on restricted duty since the incident. With the criminal trial concluded, the Met will now consult the IOPC on potential misconduct proceedings, keeping a close eye on the officer’s future role.
