Europe’s Airports Slam Shut as Icy Chaos Brings Travel to a Halt!
Budapest Airport Shuts Down Over Deadly Black Ice
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport has hit the brakes, closing all flights this morning due to treacherous black ice and extreme runway icing. The airport warned on X (formerly Twitter):
“Due to the adverse weather conditions, and similarly to several airports in Central Europe, a temporary airport closure has been implemented at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, due to the increased safety risks caused by black ice and extreme icing. For safety reasons, the airport has temporarily suspended all arrivals and departures since 10:25.”
Vienna and Bratislava Airports Hit by Frosty Shutdowns
Vienna Airport is also frozen out. Thick, refreezing ice layers forced a temporary closure, plaguing travellers with widespread delays and cancellations. The airport urges passengers to check flights constantly on January 13, 2026. A spokesperson told Sky News departures would start again at 11am, with arrivals following at noon.
Meanwhile, Bratislava Airport briefly closed due to runway ice but reopened at 11:15am. Its site warns:
“Due to adverse meteorological conditions on the runway, flight delays are expected during the morning hours. An emergency team is assessing runway safety to decide when normal operations can resume. Passengers should stay updated via airport and airline channels.”
Prague Airport Struggles With Limited Landings Amid Freeze
Václav Havel Airport Prague is limping along with just six arrivals per hour as crews battle to keep runways safe with continuous de-icing. Officials stress safety remains the top priority amid Europe’s icy grip.
January’s Frosty Mayhem Sets the Stage for Airport Chaos
This latest freeze follows a brutal start to January. Amsterdam Schiphol dumped 700 flights on January 5 thanks to the winter weather, with videos showing staff making snowmen and enjoying snowball fights amid delays.
France faced icy shutdowns too. Paris Charles de Gaulle and Orly slashed flights by 15%, while Liverpool John Lennon Airport froze operations, causing mass cancellations.
Up north, Scotland’s Loganair cancelled multiple flights, and Belfast International faced delays. Eurostar trains to the Netherlands were suspended amid the snow fury.
