Range Rover Theft Sparks High-Speed Chase in York
Police sprang into action after a Range Rover was snatched outside a shop in Acomb, York—with a Doberman locked inside!
Rapid Response and High-Tech Tracking
A call came in at 4pm from the vehicle’s owner reporting the theft. Thanks to automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and a live tracking device fitted to the stolen car, officers quickly zeroed in on its location.
Specialist units were deployed, including roads policing officers, a police dog unit, and the National Police Air Service helicopter (NPAS), all racing to catch the thief.
Stinger Stops Chase, But Dog Flees
A stinger trap was set up on the A163 at North Duffield. Less than 30 minutes after the theft, the Range Rover was stopped—only for the driver to crash and overturn the vehicle in a nearby field.
Police arrested the 29-year-old suspect still inside the car. Sadly, the victim’s terrified Doberman bolted from the wreck and ran off.
Helicopter Helps Rescue Frightened Dog
NPAS took to the skies again, tracking the scared pooch about half a mile from the crash. The dog was found safe and sound, checked over by a vet, and happily reunited with its owner.
Man Faces Multiple Serious Charges
The York man now faces a string of charges including aggravated vehicle theft, driving while disqualified, failing to stop for police, driving under the influence of drugs, dangerous driving, and no insurance.
He was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital before being held in police custody.
