Maidstone Council Strikes Deal to Remove Fire-Damaged Floating Bar
Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) has sealed an agreement to clear the remains of The Embankments Bar and Restaurant – a floating venue that’s been a fixture on the River Medway for 10 years. The barge, moored by the historic Archbishop’s Palace, was wrecked by a fire in February 2020 and has stayed closed ever since.
Fire Ruins Floating Bar – Lease Surrendered
The owners have handed back their lease on the riverbank mooring to the Council. This means the burnt-out barge will now be towed away, and all associated riverbank structures will be dismantled. Previously, any rebuild would have required fresh planning permission – a messy legal tangle resolved by this new deal.
Clear Waters Ahead for Archbishop’s Palace Plans
With the barge gone, MBC can now push forward with developments around the Archbishop’s Palace without obstacles. Meanwhile, the bar’s owners get the chance for a fresh start with a brand-new, modern venue elsewhere.

“We’re pleased this agreement finally brings an end to the long-running dispute over planning and lease issues,” said a Council spokesperson. “It’s a positive outcome for both the Council and The Embankments’ owners.”
The deal ends all legal battles over the barge and nearby pergola, marking a clean break and a hopeful future for everyone involved.
