Heroic Rescue: Firefighters Save Pony Trapped in 10ft Ditch
A 24-year-old Arabian gelding named Hector was pulled to safety after falling into a 10-foot deep ditch. The dramatic rescue unfolded on Wednesday morning, May 26th, with firefighters and vets working against the clock.
Swift Response from Fire Crews and Vets
Owner Sarah quickly called a local vet as soon as Hector got stuck. Fire crews from Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst 1, and Redbridge arrived shortly after 8am, ready to tackle the tricky rescue.
The vet sedated Hector to calm him, while the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service deployed a specialist Manitou vehicle to help haul the pony up.
Firefighters carefully extricated Hector, allowing the vet to assess him properly. Thankfully, the brave pony was soon back on his feet and reunited with a grateful Sarah.
Expert Teamwork and Skill Save the Day
“With support from the vets at Seadown Equine, we were able to formulate a plan to extricate Hector from a challenging predicament,” said Jim 1, HIWFRS animal rescue advisor.
“Hector was sedated to reduce his anxiety as the lifting strops were applied, then anaesthetised while being lifted out of the watery ditch.
This was a particularly technical rescue with a number of obstacles to overcome. It demonstrates the benefit of years of investment in knowledge and skills for these incidents.
Hector was reunited with owner Sarah, who was extremely grateful for the efforts of all the team.”
The rescue operation wrapped up just before midday after a thorough debrief. Thanks to expert coordination and quick action, Hector’s nightmare ordeal had a happy ending.
