Maidstone Burglar Snared by His Own DNA Jailed for Three Years
A Maidstone thief was finally caught red-handed — or rather, by his own DNA. Lee Cuthbert’s messy break-ins and sloppy mistakes led to his downfall and a hefty prison sentence.
Messy Burglar Leaves DNA Clues
On 19 October 2019, Cuthbert smashed a window and door to break into a home on 1 Road. He carried out a chaotic search, causing serious damage and stealing jewellery and a mobile phone. But in his haste, he cut himself inside and left bloodstains behind. That DNA would later crack the case wide open.
Caught on CCTV at Second Break-In
Just days later, on 24 October, the burglar was spotted on CCTV outside a property in Windmill Hill, Harrietsham. He and an unknown associate watched the house before smashing a window to get in. Once again, Cuthbert trashed the place, stealing jewellery and bank cards.
Arrest Attempts and Escape Foiled
On 28 October, a police officer spotted Cuthbert near Wallis Avenue, Maidstone. The officer tried to arrest him, but Cuthbert ran off. However, the fugitive was caught two days later at his home in The Harbour, Valence.
Justice Served at Maidstone Crown Court
Cuthbert, 41, pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary and escaping lawful custody. On 29 November, he was sentenced to three years in prison.
“This man is a prolific burglar who brazenly smashed his way into his victims’ properties during the hours of daylight,” said Detective Constable Billie-Louise Keane. “The occupiers returned to their houses to find considerable damage and mess, and treasured possessions stolen. It is only right that Maidstone communities are protected from this criminal by a lengthy prison sentence.”
