Virgin Media O2 pulls the plug on 3G to supercharge 4G and 5G
Virgin Media O2 is joining the UK’s 3G shutdown wave, switching off its ageing 3G network to boost faster and stronger 4G and 5G services. After turning off 3G in cities like Durham, Norwich, and Torquay, Watford is next in line this Wednesday, September 17.
The full 3G switchoff across the UK will be complete by the end of 2024. This move follows a 2021 government-backed push alongside major mobile players like EE, Three, and Vodafone to ditch outdated tech and improve mobile internet quality.
Why Virgin Media O2 is Kicking 3G to the Curb
“Switching off our 3G network will enable us to focus our investment on upgrading faster, more reliable and more energy-efficient 4G and 5G networks, giving our customers a better overall experience,” said Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2.
York added most users already have 4G or 5G phones, so they won’t notice a thing. But those still clinging to 3G devices in Watford must act fast or risk losing all mobile data access.
Who’s Going to Feel the Pinch?
- Virgin Media O2 customers on 3G will lose mobile data but can still make voice calls and texts on 2G – with weaker call quality.
- Other networks relying on Virgin Media O2’s infrastructure, like Giffgaff, Sky Mobile, and Tesco Mobile, will also be hit.
Martin Lewis from Money Saving Expert warns: “If you have a phone or SIM that only supports 3G, you’ll effectively no longer be able to use the internet once it’s fully switched off by your provider. You’ll struggle to do even basic tasks online.”
Still Got an Old 3G Phone? Here’s Your Next Move
Virgin Media O2 says vulnerable customers using 3G devices have been offered free 4G-ready handsets. Others can snap up new devices at discounted prices. Plus, trade in your old phone through 1 for handy cashback.
