Five Men Convicted of Brutal Archway Murders in Case of Mistaken Identity

Targeted Attack on Elthorne Estate Ends in Tragedy

Five men have been found guilty of the savage murders of a 15-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man after launching a violent, targeted attack on the Elthorne Estate in Archway. The group wrongly believed their victims were members of a rival gang.

The convicted men are Lorik Luppi, 21, of St John’s Way, N19; Abel Chunda, 29, of Caldy Walk, N1; Jason Furtado, 28, of Halton Road, N1; Eden Clark, 29, of Huddleston Road, N7; and Xavier Poponne, 21, of Halton Road, Islington. They were all convicted at the Old Bailey on Wednesday 23 July of two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Fatal Night of Mistaken Identity

On the night of Thursday 29 June 2023, the group travelled to Elthorne Estate armed and ready. They ignored a plea from one victim’s girlfriend to stay indoors. Instead, they armed themselves with weapons and arrived at the estate around 10:30pm, long after most residents had gone to bed.

The brutal attack left two dead and one seriously wounded after stabbings in what police described as a senseless act of violence fuelled by gang rivalry paranoia.

Police Crack the Case

Detectives launched an intense investigation immediately after the killings, leading to the arrests of all five suspects by 3 July 2023. They gathered key evidence, including victim statements and details only the attackers could know.

“The men went into this estate with the intention of killing anyone, under the false impression that those there were rival gang members. This was a senseless, violent act which has shattered the lives of those injured and the community.” – Police spokesperson

Justice on the Horizon

All five convicted men will return to the Old Bailey for sentencing on Thursday 25 and Friday 26 September 2025. The case highlights the devastating consequences of gang violence and mistaken identity.
